He has not been released yet but he is ready! His numbers are WBC .3 and Neutrophil (ABS) .12 we are almost there. He has not had a temperature since Monday and the doctors are pleased with his response to the meds they are giving him. Once his counts reach zero we are looking for them to rise, which will mean the marrow is grafting.

Our prayer now is that he will be protected from all infections and viruses, until his body can protect itself.
AJ had his dad cut all his hair off, now the buzz cut that he had left is starting to fall out. Aubrey (dad) cut all his hair off to join AJ in this journey, check out their pictures. AJ is not happy about the hair. I reminded him that it was a small price to pay for a cure...he agreed! Plus it is only hair it will grow back.

Tomorrow is the first day of school for Daniel, Jonathan and I. Jonathan is not able to go back yet, still recovering and in some pain. I will post updates from their website as they post them. The Smith Family has gone through this process all of AJ's life.....I have created a calendar as a fundraising item to help the Smith Family with all the upcoming medicals they will endure. Please click on the Fundraising link to the right if you would like to help.
AJ was born 19 years ago with Sickle Cell Disease, it has caused many limitations for him. No organized sports, pain crisis, lots of medications, and blood transfusions. With many more.
After being hospitalized in March, his doctor discovered that AJ had 2 brothers and suggested we have the boys tested to look for a match for a bone marrow transplant.
As it turns out, Daniel was a half match and Jonathan was a perfect match for the transplant. AJ and Jonathan made the decision to go forward with the procedure, after much discussion and prayer among themselves. Our journey began on Thursday July 22. This is going to be a 12-18 month journey. Everyone wants to know what we need...right now we need your prayers, we don't know what our physical needs will be. Please stay tuned to this site to see how you can be a part of this miraculous journey that God has given us. Jeremiah 30:17 "I will restore you to health and heal your wounds," declares the Lord...

The bone marrow harvest was done on Friday, Aug. 6th and was a success. Jonathan is recovering and today is what they consider day zero for AJ. It is the day that starts the marrow transplant for him and we have a 100 day critical period. So AJ was up riding the stationary bike getting in his daily exercise. I will post pictures when I can. We have been at the hospital since 6 am (current time 3:40 pm) and up since 3:30 am.

It has been a long day, I am exhausted and ready to crash. Waiting for Jonathan to get his discharge papers so we can go home and recover :). Thanks to everyone for your prayers and thoughts. AJ's counts are going to continue to drop and the chemo is clearing his marrow out of his bones to make way for his new marrow from his brother Jonathan. Continue praying, this is when the real challenges begin. He is being protected now only by antibiotics, until the new marrow grafts into his bones.

As of Sunday Jonathan is recovering well, moving around with very little help, what a strong, courageous child. His name means "gift from God". He has given a gift to his oldest brother.

Today is what we call Day 1 in the transplant community. It is the first day of 100 days after transplant. These days are so critical for us. I check AJ's labs every morning, we were told what to look at specifically, his WBC (white blood cells) and his absolute neutrophil counts. These both will drop to zero, then AJ's body will no longer be able to protect itself from any infection virus, etc. This morning they were 1.7 & 1.36. Once they reach zero, then we have a window of 14-28 days where we need to see them begin to come back up again. This will mean that the marrow is grafting and growing in AJ's body. He is having headaches from his blood pressure being too high, this is common, his body is rejecting Jonathan's marrow (also expected). On day one, three, six and eleven, they will be giving AJ a medicine to try and prevent graft vs host disease. This is where his marrow is fighting the new marrow. This is when the real fight begins, the doctor said these next three weeks will be turbulent. Your prayers, cards and well wishes will be appreciated. School begins on Thursday and that includes all the back to school activities that go along with that for Daniel and Jonathan. I will return to work also, until AJ is released from the hospital.

Today, which we consider - Day 2~ AJ said he slept OK last night, he has developed hives from some of the medicine they are giving him and it makes him itchy. He is tired which is from the chemo, the doctors said it will take about two weeks for the chemo to leave his body. AJ is doing better that expected! The doctors mentioned that he may come home sooner than we thought. His counts are dropping the neutorphil is at .67 and WBC is 1.0 So we are waiting for the grafting to take place after his counts get to zero. We are headed in the right direction, so far. We thank God for being a great physician! Jonathan is resting well, moved around a little too much yesterday. We will keep him quiet today.

Quilting

I have put the dolls aside to try my hand at thread painting on fabric. I have been inspired by Terry White's book called Thread Painting Made Easy. Her samples just look beautiful and I am amazed by them. I have had this book for a while, and have put off given it a try myself. The snowy cold weather here in Nashville, TN has kept me couped up inside and I figured that this would be a perfect opportunity for me to give this a try.

So here are my first attempts at it. Both pieces will eventually be purses. I have to say that they I think that they are coming out good. This process is not to be rushed. You definitely have to take your time with the sewing when doing this. The first one I have done is a large yellow flower on a hand dyed green background. I am now going to add beads on it to glam it up. I did the sewing in two sittings as it took some time and my hand got tired from controlling the fabric.

My second one is just at the beginning stages. There isn't as much sewing on this one. There will be more background quilting on this one. The flower pieces are cut out of a white fabric and ironed onto the blue background with wonder under. Even though there isn't as much sewing on this one you still have to control your outline stitches around the flowers. I am excited to see what the end result will be!

Playing with fabric

I've gotten back in my studio and started playing with fabric. Just started draping the fabric on the doll dress form that I made. Also added style lines on the form. I have been sewing for many years, however, I have always used patterns. For the first time I am learning how to create my own patterns and I am amazed at the technical aspect of it all. Now I understand the darts and what to do to create different looks! I love this green fabric. It lays and flows so beautiful. I made a dress with it about 12 years ago for an office christmas party....wow that was a long time ago! I can't believe that I have saved these few pieces of fabric for that long....then again, I shouldn't be surprised. I was also playing around with creating a pattern by fitting paper towels on the dress form.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_P_-R3_ebTDw/S2MnOCyf0mI/AAAAAAAAAJE/twmFAOYENyw/s1600-h/Draping1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I took a little break this weekend and watched football...go Brett Favre! He just amazes me.

Now for the next challenge. I am joining a challenge on my yahoo doll club http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClothDollMaking/ to make and dress a doll form. We were told we could download a free pattern for a 24" dress form here http://www.lincolnmold.com/ I have done that and made the dress form. I am still waiting for the dress form from the host of the challenge as she said hers would be smaller. I will make hers as well. The one I have done is bigger than I had expected. I have been playing around with draping fabric trying to figure out what I want to do. I have a couple of ideas and will probably go through a few different ones before I decide on how to dress the form. This is a great idea and wonderful practice as I won't have to focus on a head/face. My focus will strictly be on designing the outfit which is my favorite thing to do!

Juliette Rose is finally finished!!!

Juliette Rose is done. Now Juliette Rose needs some hair and jewelry!

I am also proud of myself with regards to the blog. It has been a week and I have managed to keep up with it. It is a learning process for sure. I am enjoying making the doll in this fashion.... stopping at intervals to take pictures and upload these post. I really should have done all my dolls in this way. When I look back I have no details showing how my other dolls were made. There is something to be said about this whole documentation process.

New face.....and she finally gets a name!!!

Finally....I am getting there! The size fits much better and I am happy with the initial face details. The first two attempts I was doing a pancake style head that was in Barbara Willis's book for this doll. I have not done pancake style heads before and I am learning that they are not my favorite. I much prefer this style. Doesn't it look much better???

And yes.....she finally has a name!!! Her name is Juliette Rose. I think it fits her perfectly...thanks to my neighbor Jenn who helped me with her name. I do think the face helps her come together and get an identity. Without the proper face I just couldn't give her an identity. I am still playing around with the hair....stay tuned for that update!

Faces....

I started working on the face the other night and the first one just didn't work at all. I totally messed up her lips. I also thought that it was a bit too small so I started on face#2 which is pictured above. Now this one is too big! I will get there....I know I will. It has been over a year since I have made a doll and the face has always been the hardest part for me so I knew that this was going to take a few tries. The second face does look a lot better than the first... it's just a bit too big....so face# 3 should work much better. I will save this face for another doll and finish the features when I get to that point. I have made hers (still have to come up with a name for this doll) out of black leather which I have turned inside out so the suede part is on the outside. I thought the softness of the suede goes well with her outfit. I have braided some pink and black embroidery floss which I have used as trim around the edges.

After I put the trim around the edges I finished them off with a beautiful pink flower. The flower goes perfect with the floral pattern in the fabric I used for her top. I guess that is what happens when you go to a new years eve party and don't get home till after 1:00am. I am definitely feeling my age! I have not stayed up that long in years!!!!!Monday I have to go back to work so I want to get as much done as I can in the next two days.

Anyway, today I am looking at hair color for my doll. I have a few selections of mohair and from what I have I am thinking that this orange reddish color may work the best. I don't think that the other yarn types would work for this particular doll. They just don't quite give me the look I want. I may hold off with the hair as I have some other mohair colors that I have ordered. They should arrive any day now. Maybe I should work on the shoes for now...or maybe continue sculpting the face.....

As you can see I put off the face as long as I possibly can. I have the most trouble with the eyes. I am never completely satisfied with how mine turn out. I shall keep working on it!

Happy New Year!!!

This is all new to me and I do not consider myself to be a good "writer", however, I thought I would try something new. That is what the beginning of a new year is all about after all....trying new things! So bear with me as I figure this all out.

I have been a bit out of commission for the past two months so I am starting the new year off by making a new doll. I haven't made a doll in a while and it is one of my great passions. My favorite part is creating the outfit and adding all the embellishments. My color palette for this doll is pink and black.

I recently purchased Cloth Doll Artistry by Barbara Willis so I decided to use her Danielle doll body. The face is always the hardest part for me so I am waiting till the end to finish her face. She has a cotton body made from the different fabrics shown above. Her sleeves and skirt are made with a black silk dupioni fabric with pink and black ribbon trim. The same trim is around her arms and along the top of her dress top. Pink ribbon is wrapped around her waist and tied in a bow in the back. Pink buttons finish off her sleeve cuffs. She has bloomers under her skirt that compliment her legs!
